On India’s 79th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the farming community, calling farmers the “backbone of Bharat’s progress” and central to the nation’s transformation from food dependency to self-reliance.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, PM Modi highlighted India’s position as a global agricultural powerhouse — No. 1 in milk, pulses, and jute production, and No. 2 in rice, wheat, cotton, fruits, and vegetables. He noted that agricultural exports have surpassed ₹4 lakh crore, reflecting the sector’s growing contribution to India’s economy.

To accelerate regional development, the Prime Minister announced the PM Dhanya Dhanya Krishi Yojana, aimed at uplifting 100 of the country’s most underdeveloped farming districts. “For farmers, fishermen, and livestock rearers, Modi will always stand as a wall of protection,” he said.

Revisiting the Indus Water Treaty

Calling the Indus Water Treaty “unjust,” PM Modi stated that India would no longer accept a one-sided arrangement that disadvantages its farmers. He pledged to reclaim India’s rightful share of river waters to support domestic agriculture.

Strengthening Agricultural Self-Reliance

PM Modi emphasized that India must not depend on imports for fertilisers and key agricultural inputs. Domestic production, he said, is essential to ensuring food security, enhancing farmers’ incomes, and bolstering economic sovereignty.

Empowered Farmers Through Targeted Schemes

The Prime Minister credited initiatives such as PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, irrigation and rainwater harvesting projects, quality seed distribution, and timely fertiliser supply with improving farmer confidence and productivity nationwide.

Reiterating his unwavering support, he declared: “Bharat will not compromise on farmers’ interests. Modi will stand as a wall against any policy harmful to farmers, livestock rearers, or fishermen.”
