Cargill reduces CO₂ emissions by 45% at Baupte facility in France through €25 million investment

FoodTechBiz Desk

Cargill has announced a significant milestone in its sustainability journey, achieving a 45% reduction in CO₂ emissions at its Baupte production site in France. This achievement follows a strategic €25 million investment aimed at enhancing the facility’s energy efficiency and overall industrial performance.

The initiative is expected to reduce emissions by approximately 13,700 metric tons annually, reinforcing Cargill’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable operations.

A key component of this transformation is the modernization of the site’s most energy-intensive process through the implementation of Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) technology. By capturing, recompressing, and reusing vapors, MVR significantly improves operational efficiency while maintaining high production performance.

The Baupte facility plays a crucial role in the production of carrageenan, an essential ingredient used in a wide range of food applications. Carrageenan produced at the site supports the development and reformulation of everyday products, including dairy desserts, chocolate milk, plant-based alternatives, confectionery, and sauces. It provides the texture, creaminess, and consistency consumers expect, particularly as demand grows for plant-based, gelatin-free, and dairy-free options.

This milestone underscores Cargill’s continued focus on innovation and sustainability, while supporting evolving consumer preferences and advancing more efficient food production systems.
