Government expands turmeric exports through SPICED scheme

Spices Board initiatives and National Turmeric Board drive quality, value addition, and global market access

FoodTechBiz Desk

The Government of India, through the Spices Board, is strengthening turmeric exports under the “Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development (SPICED)” scheme. Aimed at expanding India’s global footprint in turmeric and other spices, the initiative integrates quality improvement, market access, and value addition programs.

Under SPICED, the Spices Board is implementing:

  • Food safety and quality certifications to meet global standards.

  • Post-harvest quality upgradation and support for processing and value addition.

  • Training programs to enhance quality, entrepreneurship, and capacity building among turmeric stakeholders.

  • Quality evaluation of export consignments through accredited laboratories to ensure compliance with importing country requirements.

  • Domestic and international Buyer-Seller Meets to connect farmers, exporters, processors, and international buyers directly.

To further unlock turmeric’s potential, the National Turmeric Board, constituted on October 4, 2023, focuses on:

  • Promoting new product development, value addition, and international awareness of turmeric.

  • Facilitating market research, infrastructure creation, and logistics improvements for exports.

  • Building resilient supply chains with strong forward and backward linkages.

  • Driving compliance with global quality and safety standards.

  • Encouraging skill development, documentation of traditional knowledge, and research on medicinal and wellness benefits of turmeric.

India remains a major player in the global turmeric trade. Since 2020, Bangladesh, UAE, USA, Malaysia, and Morocco have emerged as the top importers of Indian turmeric. Detailed export volumes, revenue figures, and India’s contribution to global turmeric trade are provided in the annexures.
