The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced the reclassification of points related to 'food grade packaging material' from ‘Non-Critical’ to ‘Critical’ in the inspection checklists for various food sectors. This significant update underscores the vital role that packaging plays in maintaining food safety and compliance with the FSS (Packaging) Regulations, 2018.

The change is based on the provisions of Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing & Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011, and comes in continuation of earlier orders dated March 9, 2018, May 14, 2020 (Corrigendum), and November 2, 2022.

Updated Scoring and Requirements

The inspection checklists for the following categories have been updated to reflect the critical importance of certified food-grade packaging:

Each updated checklist now requires that packaging materials in direct contact with food must not only be food-grade and in sound condition, but also certified by a NABL-accredited laboratory under the FSS (Packaging) Regulations, 2018. These records must be maintained and verified during inspections.

Implementation

The revised inspection checklist has been implemented in the FoSCoS (Food Safety Compliance System). All food business operators (FBOs) are urged to ensure full compliance with these updated requirements to maintain licensing validity and uphold food safety standards.
