New microbiology laboratory at SFTL Bhubaneswar strengthens food testing capacity in Odisha

The Microbiology Laboratory section at the State Food Testing Laboratory (SFTL), Bhubaneswar, was officially inaugurated on 11 April 2025 by Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, along with Shri Mohan Charan Majhi, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha.

The newly constructed laboratory spans 104.3 square meters and has been developed at a cost of INR 4.57 crore, fully funded by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS).

This new microbiology facility is a major step forward in strengthening the region’s food safety infrastructure. It is designed to enhance the implementation of food safety standards, facilitate advanced microbiological testing, and support a more robust and responsive food regulatory framework in Odisha and surrounding regions.

The establishment of this laboratory marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to ensure the availability of safe and quality food for consumers and reinforces the government’s commitment to public health and food safety.
