Bunge expands portfolio with new pea and faba protein concentrates

FoodTechBiz Desk

Bunge is excited to announce the expansion of its protein portfolio to include pea and faba protein concentrates, complementing its leading soy protein concentrate offerings. In collaboration with Golden Fields, a prominent agricultural company and key dry miller of pea and faba in Europe, Bunge aims to meet the rising demand for plant proteins beyond soy in the food, pet, and feed segments. Golden Fields has constructed and will operate a new state-of-the-art factory in Liepaja, Latvia, dedicated exclusively to producing these protein concentrates for Bunge.

Meaningful product attributes

Bunge’s new range of pea and faba protein concentrates are designed to meet the diverse needs of its customers. Key features include:

  • Non-GMO

  • Light in color

  • Finely powdered

  • 55-70% protein content on a dry-basis

  • Allergen-free

These attributes allow food and feed customers to easily enhance protein content and support non-GMO and allergen-free labeling on their products.

Sustainability benefits

Bunge’s pea and faba protein concentrates not only cater to the growing demand for plant-based proteins but also bring significant sustainability benefits. They are produced from pea and faba beans farmed using crop-rotation practices and extracted through dry-fractionation, avoiding the use of water or solvents typically utilized in pulse protein production. The crop sourcing is done from a European network of local farmers across Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, minimizing the distance to the processing venue and thereby reducing the carbon footprint.

Expert Consultation

The addition of soy, pea, and faba protein concentrates complements Bunge’s existing portfolio of oils, fats, and lecithins, providing customized solutions to meet a broad range of customer needs across the food and feed industries.
