As industries worldwide seek safer, healthier, and more sustainable operating environments, innovative lighting technology is emerging as an unexpected catalyst for change. At the forefront of this transformation is IllumiPure, a U.S.-based company that has reimagined LED lighting by combining human-centric illumination with antimicrobial capabilities.

In an exclusive interaction with FoodTechBiz, Mr John Higgins, CEO of IllumiPure, shared insights into the company's patented technology, its rapid adoption in India, and its long-term vision for transforming workplaces, food processing facilities, healthcare institutions, schools, and homes.

Redefining LED lighting for human health

According to Mr Higgins, conventional LED lighting contains a 450-nanometer blue light spike that has been associated with eye strain and other health concerns. IllumiPure has developed a unique approach by replacing those harmful spectrums with healthier alternatives.

"Our core technology is based on removing the harmful aspects of conventional LED lighting and replacing them with healthier spectrums. They are healthier because they are better for the eyes, support a healthier circadian rhythm, and provide antimicrobial benefits," Mr Higgins explained.

The technology actively combats fungi, microbes, viruses, and bacteria on surfaces as well as in the air, while remaining safe for human exposure.

"In fact, we are the only white LED manufacturer in the world with IEC 62471 Exempt Status, which means our lighting presents no photobiological hazard to humans whatsoever," he said.

More than just lighting

Mr Higgins believes the biggest misconception about lighting is that it serves only one purpose—illumination.

"With a regular LED, you are simply buying a light. Once you leave the room, it's doing nothing except consuming electricity," he said. "We often refer to it as the laziest employee you have. You are constantly paying it, but when you are not directly underneath it, it isn't doing anything for you."

IllumiPure's technology, however, continues working around the clock.

"Whether you are in the room or not, it continues to reduce microbial activity and address environmental challenges within the space. Instead of simply consuming energy, it actively works for you all the time."

India emerges as a strategic growth market

While many initially assume hospitals are the primary market for antimicrobial lighting, Mr Higgins revealed that demand is expanding rapidly across multiple sectors.

"We are experiencing tremendous success in schools, residential environments, and industrial facilities," he said. "There is virtually no industry or sector that our technology does not positively impact."

India, in particular, has emerged as one of the company's most promising markets.

"One of the remarkable things about India is how quickly people understood the value of our technology in food processing applications," Mr Higgins noted. "The food processing industry embraced it very rapidly."

According to him, food manufacturers immediately recognized the dual benefits of improving employee wellbeing while creating safer production environments. "For them, it is truly a win-win situation," he said.

The strong response has already encouraged IllumiPure to deepen its commitment to the country. "We are opening one office in New Delhi and another in Hyderabad," Mr Higgins revealed. "The rapid adoption by the food industry has also encouraged other sectors to take notice."

Strategic partnership with Rance LLP accelerating market expansion

Behind IllumiPure's rapid progress in India is its strategic partnership with Rance FPS LLP, led by Mr. Gurinder Singh, founder, Rance FPS LLP whose deep industry relationships and market expertise have helped accelerate the company's engagement with leading food processing companies, dairy manufacturers, healthcare institutions, and government stakeholders.

Mr Higgins was unequivocal in his appreciation of Mr Gurinder Singh's role in establishing IllumiPure's presence in the Indian market. "I have to say that Gurinder is one of the best partners I have ever worked with anywhere in the world," he said. "He is extremely focused, highly responsive, and completely committed to his vision. Once he believes in something, he pursues it with determination and speed."

According to Mr Higgins, Mr Singh quickly understood the value proposition of IllumiPure's technology and has worked tirelessly to create awareness and connect the company with key decision-makers across industries.

"Several of his clients who tested our technology were amazed not only that it worked, but that it exceeded expectations," Mr Higgins noted. "Throughout the process, he consistently stood behind the technology and reinforced his confidence in its capabilities."

As IllumiPure's channel partner and on-ground representative in India, Rance FPS LLP has played a crucial role in converting interest into business opportunities and opening doors to strategic discussions with major organizations.

"The awareness they have created and the relationships they have developed have opened many doors for us," Mr Higgins said. "Gurinder has been instrumental in helping us enter organizations and engage with decision-makers. Because of his efforts, we have been able to accelerate our growth in India significantly."

With multiple customer evaluations, pilot projects, and commercial deployments currently underway, Mr Higgins believes the partnership with Rance FPS LLP will remain central to IllumiPure's long-term expansion strategy in India.

Multiple industry partnerships underway

Although bound by confidentiality agreements, Mr Higgins hinted at several major developments in the pipeline.

"During my last two visits to India, we conducted approximately thirteen high-level meetings, and within sixty days we achieved twelve adoptions of our technology," he disclosed.

The company is currently working with organizations spanning dairy processing, snack food manufacturing, and government agricultural departments.

"Many of these organizations have already placed orders and are currently testing our products," Mr Higgins said. "One particularly large company has been evaluating our technology for the past ninety days, and they have been astonished by the results."

Protecting innovation through patents and trade secrets

Having spent more than a decade developing the technology, IllumiPure has built a comprehensive intellectual property strategy. "For the past eleven years, we have been very strategic in how we approached intellectual property protection," Mr Higgins explained.

However, he emphasized that patents alone are not enough.

"Intellectual property is extremely important, but it is only as valuable as your ability to defend it," he said.

In addition to patents, the company has deliberately maintained certain technological processes as trade secrets. "When you file a patent, you must publicly disclose how the technology works. By keeping some of our innovations as trade secrets, competitors have no way of understanding exactly how we achieve our results."

AI and Predictive Intelligence shape the next phase

IllumiPure is also integrating artificial intelligence, sensors, and advanced energy management systems into its platform.

"We have incorporated artificial intelligence into certain lighting fixtures, and we also have sensor-based systems integrated into our products," Mr Higgins said.

The company's future systems will move beyond monitoring and provide predictive intelligence.

"These systems will not only monitor current conditions but will also provide predictive insights. They will be able to identify potential issues before they occur and suggest corrective actions."

For sectors such as food processing and healthcare, Mr Higgins believes predictive capabilities could significantly improve operational efficiency and risk management.

India's manufacturing ecosystem impresses

One of the strongest endorsements Mr Higgins offered during the interview was directed at India's manufacturing sector. "I have visited food manufacturing facilities all over the world," he said. "I can honestly say that some of the best food manufacturing facilities I have ever seen are located in India."

He added that Indian businesses often evaluate and adopt innovations more quickly than their global counterparts. "Decision-makers in India seem to place a greater emphasis on human well-being and workplace conditions," Higgins observed.

Manufacturing expansion in India

The company is already taking concrete steps toward local manufacturing.

"We currently produce the LED components in Houston and ship them to Hyderabad, where assembly of one of our lighting fixtures is already taking place," Mr Higgins revealed.

The CEO expects India to become a major pillar of IllumiPure's global growth strategy. "Our goal is to bring the technology to India, manufacture it in India, and allow it to grow organically as a product that contributes to India's industrial development," he said.

"Over the next five years, I expect our manufacturing footprint and overall presence in India to grow dramatically—perhaps by a hundredfold compared to where we are today."

Building a safer and more sustainable future

Looking beyond business growth, Mr Higgins sees health, safety, sustainability, and responsible innovation as the defining themes of the next decade.

"Organizations are increasingly focusing on long-term value rather than short-term gains," he said. "They are asking themselves how they can avoid future problems instead of simply reacting to them after they occur."

He believes the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated this shift. "Organizations now understand that they have a responsibility to do their part to prevent future disruptions," Mr Higgins said.

As IllumiPure expands its presence in India, the company aims to play a role in helping industries create healthier, safer, and more sustainable environments.

"We are committed to bringing healthier, safer, and more sustainable lighting solutions to industries, institutions, and communities across India and around the world," Mr Higgins concluded. "The future is very exciting, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be part of that journey."
