The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India, has intensified its efforts to curb the misuse of the ISI mark on packaged drinking water. Established under the BIS Act 2016, the BIS plays a crucial role in formulating standards, product certification, laboratory testing, and system certification. Its initiatives ensure the availability of safe, reliable, and quality goods, minimize health hazards, and promote environmental protection, benefiting both consumers and industries while supporting public policies such as product safety, food safety, and consumer protection.
Under the BIS Act 2016, any unauthorized use of the Standard Mark (ISI mark) or its imitation is prohibited. Violators face severe penalties, including imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of at least INR 2,00,000, or both. The BIS Act can be accessed here.
Acting on a tip-off, officials from the BIS Mumbai Branch Office-II conducted an enforcement raid on November 25, 2024, at M/s. Anshita Enterprises, located at Shop No. 20, Building Material Market, Plot No. 32, Sector-2, Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai, Thane - 400709. The raid revealed that the firm was storing and selling packaged drinking water bearing the ISI mark without a valid license. Substantial quantities of such products were seized as they violated Section 17 of the BIS Act 2016.
Legal proceedings are being initiated against the offenders, with the case set to be filed in court.
The BIS urges the general public to report any instances of misuse of the ISI mark on packaged drinking water (other than packaged natural mineral water). Reports can be submitted to:
