Following the momentous meeting of chief executive officer, Rachel Dreskin from the US-based Plant Based Foods Association (PBFA) and executive director Sanjay Sethi of India’s Plant Based Foods Industry Association (PBFIA), the International Plant Based Foods Working Group (IPBFWG) is hosting an official meeting ahead of the upcoming 1st Plant-Based Foods Summit taking place at Hotel Le Meridien in New Delhi on 26 May 2022.

The IPBFWG comprises seven international plant-based food associations, including PBFA, PBFIA, Plant-Based Foods Canada, European Alliance for Plant Based Foods, European Plant-based Foods Association, Plant-Based Food Alliance UK, and Plant Based Foods Association China. IPBFWG is founded with a mission to support the development of this sector as it globally surges in popularity. Members of the IPFWG are associations that represent companies involved in the plant-based food space in their respective countries, united in their efforts to bring about a healthier, more sustainable, and more humane food system. At this meeting, Dreskin and Sethi will join PBFA board president Nicole Sopko, vice president of Upton’s Naturals, and working group members will align and pledge to coordinate on high-level strategy and initiatives to advance the growth and opportunity of plant-based foods in the country.

Sanjay Sethi, executive director, PBFIA, said, "The Indian diet is carb-heavy, which means our protein intake is drastically low. However, our country has immense geographical and agricultural capacity to produce plant-based protein. The Plant Based Foods Industry Association's goal is to meet India's protein requirements by creating a reliable system for plant-based food businesses. The association will help build and support such initiatives with expert support, infrastructure, and guidance from food scientists. PBFIA is an initiative that ushers the next era of health, sustainability and prosperity for farmers and plant-based food businesses."

Sethi added, "To achieve the above, PBFIA is hosting the 1st Plant Based Foods Summit. A unique platform that aims to bring together the entire plant-based foods industry and key stakeholders viz. government functionaries, the scientific community, related food industry, institutes and NGOs”.

With international momentum for plant-based foods at an all-time high, the IPBFWG’s meeting signals the start of a new generation of support and international collaboration to bring about a sustainable future where plant-based foods are accessible to all.
