Amul increases fresh milk prices by ₹2 per litre effective 1 May 2025

FoodTechBiz Desk

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets milk and milk products under the iconic Amul brand, has announced a price increase of ₹2 per litre for its fresh pouch milk, effective 1st May 2025. The revised prices will apply across all markets in India.

This ₹2 per litre increase translates to a 3–4% rise in MRP, which remains significantly below the average food inflation rate. The price revision is driven by the rising input costs in milk production borne by over 36 lakh milk producers associated with Amul.

Notably, Amul has extended multiple benefits to consumers over the past year. It had provided 50 ml and 100 ml extra milk in 1-litre and 2-litre packs respectively for nearly five months, and in January 2025, it reduced the price of 1-litre packs by ₹1 across all markets. This is the first price revision since June 2024.

“This price hike is being done due to an increase in the input costs of production of milk to our 36 lakh milk producers. Our member unions have also increased farmers' prices in the same proportion over the last year,” Amul stated.

As a cooperative, Amul follows a unique model where nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers is passed on directly to milk producers. The latest price revision aims to ensure remunerative returns to farmers and motivate them towards higher milk production, ensuring the sustainability of the dairy value chain.
