FoodTechBiz Desk

The Union Budget 2025-26 has introduced significant state-specific initiatives for Bihar, focusing on the agricultural and food processing sectors. The government has announced the establishment of a Makhana Board in the state and the setting up of a National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Management, reinforcing its commitment to 'Purvodaya'—the development of Eastern India.

Makhana Board to boost production and value addition

Recognizing Bihar's prominence in makhana production, the government has decided to establish a dedicated Makhana Board to enhance its production, processing, value addition, and marketing. This initiative aims to empower farmers and stakeholders involved in makhana cultivation and trade. Key aspects of the initiative include:

  • Organizing farmers into Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) to strengthen collective bargaining and market access.

  • Providing handholding and training support to makhana farmers to improve their production techniques and processing capabilities.

  • Ensuring farmers receive benefits from all relevant government schemes, facilitating financial and technical assistance.

NIFTEM to boost Eastern region’s food processing sector

As part of its vision for the Purvodaya initiative, the government has also announced the establishment of a National Institute of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Management in Bihar. This institution is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing food processing activities across the Eastern region. The key benefits of this initiative include:

  • Enhanced income for farmers by promoting value addition to their agricultural produce.

  • Skilling and entrepreneurship development to create employment opportunities, especially for the youth.

  • Strengthening the overall food processing ecosystem, thereby driving economic growth in Bihar and neighboring states.

The introduction of these initiatives marks a significant step in strengthening Bihar’s agricultural and food processing sectors, ensuring sustainable development, economic empowerment, and greater market accessibility for farmers.
