Packaging innovation takes centre stage in the fight against food waste at interpack China 2026

FoodTechBiz Desk

With one-third of all food produced globally lost or wasted, the food and beverage industry is under growing pressure to act. Packaging — as the final barrier between production and consumption — is increasingly recognised as a frontline solution for reducing spoilage, extending shelf life, and cutting supply chain losses.

The SAVE FOOD Initiative, co-founded by the FAO, UNEP, Messe Düsseldorf, and interpack, is driving this transformation through innovation. At interpack 2026 in Düsseldorf, the SAVE FOOD Awards 2026 spotlighted breakthrough solutions, including a real-time spoilage detection sensor, a 100% recyclable mono-material resealable PET pack, and a lightweight all-in-one liquid food packaging system — all delivering measurable reductions in food loss across the supply chain.

Now, the initiative is heading to Asia. The Save Food (China) Forum will take centre stage at interpack China 2026, on November 16–18, 2026, at SNIEC, Shanghai. Government officials, food processors, R&D professionals, and supply chain experts will convene to explore fresh food preservation packaging, lightweight circular materials, and supply chain loss reduction strategies.

In a landmark move, interpack China 2026 is also partnering with the Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP) to bring international best practices and sustainable packaging design expertise to the Asia-Pacific region.

Global F&B leaders — including Nestlé, Unilever, Mondelēz, and Mars Wrigley — are already confirmed to attend, making this the must-visit platform for food technology and packaging procurement in 2026.
