At the latest edition of AAHAR 2026, held from 10–14 March at Bharat Mandapam, Cosmo Plastech used its debut appearance to underline a strategic shift in its packaging portfolio. The company showcased its expanding capabilities in rigid packaging while outlining plans to introduce a nine-layer barrier sheet line—an innovation that could strengthen packaging solutions for the Indian food industry.
For Cosmo Plastech, the exhibition served as a platform not only to showcase its product range but also to highlight its evolving role in the food packaging industry. According to Mr. Himanshu Gupta, Business Head at Cosmo Plastech, AAHAR provided a valuable opportunity to connect with a wide range of stakeholders across the food and hospitality sectors.
“AAHAR is always one of the biggest exhibitions as far as food, especially edible products, are concerned. We always love to participate in such exhibitions, and this is actually the first time we are exhibiting here,” he said.
Strategic debut at AAHAR
While the company has previously participated in specialised industry gatherings such as the World Mithayi Namkeen Convention and the Indian Ice Creams Congress & Expo, its participation at AAHAR reflects a broader outreach strategy to engage food manufacturers, packaging converters, and brand owners at scale.
To reinforce this message, Cosmo Plastech designed a large exhibition stand that showcased its complete production portfolio, highlighting the company’s integrated approach to rigid packaging.
“We have taken a large booth because we wanted to display our entire production portfolio,” Gupta explained. “Secondly, we are coming up with our new nine-layer barrier line. It is a European line that is currently being introduced in India.”
Advancing barrier packaging capabilities
A key highlight of Cosmo Plastech’s presentation was its upcoming nine-layer barrier sheet technology, which represents a significant step forward for barrier packaging solutions in the domestic market.
At present, barrier sheet manufacturing in India remains limited, with most available solutions based on seven-layer structures. By introducing nine-layer technology, Cosmo Plastech aims to enhance packaging performance, particularly in applications requiring extended shelf life.
“At present, there is only one other company in India manufacturing barrier sheets. We are going to be the second company to introduce a nine-layer barrier because currently nobody has a nine-layer barrier, not even our competitors,” Mr Gupta noted.
Barrier sheets play a critical role in food packaging by protecting products from oxygen, moisture and external contaminants—factors that directly influence shelf life, product safety and quality. Higher-layer barrier structures can offer improved protection, making them particularly relevant for ready-to-eat foods and processed products.
“This new development will actually open many opportunities. Wherever companies need longer product shelf life, they will be able to pack their products in our barrier sheet trays or cups,” he said.
Expanding access to advanced materials
Beyond introducing a new technology, Cosmo Plastech also aims to broaden access to barrier sheet materials within the Indian packaging ecosystem. Limited domestic production has historically constrained availability, creating opportunities for new entrants with advanced manufacturing capabilities.
“Now we are going to open this market. We are going to launch these sheets for everyone, and I believe that now everybody will be able to access them and start manufacturing various trays and cups using our sheets,” Gupta explained.
The move is expected to benefit thermoformers and packaging converters looking to develop higher-performance food packaging formats.
Building a comprehensive rigid packaging portfolio
Cosmo Plastech’s presence at the exhibition also highlighted its strategic expansion beyond flexible packaging, a segment in which the Cosmo group has traditionally built strong market recognition.
“Our main objective is to make the world aware that we are now also into rigid packaging, apart from flexible packaging,” Mr Gupta said. “We are offering a 360-degree solution where we provide sheets, thermoforming, IML and non-IML products.”
By integrating sheet production, thermoforming and advanced decoration technologies such as in-mold labeling (IML), the company is positioning itself as a comprehensive solution provider for rigid packaging applications.
“I believe Cosmo is a brand that can deliver consistency and quality. These factors motivated us to participate in such exhibitions,” Mr Gupta added.
Launch timeline and market potential
Cosmo Plastech plans to officially launch its nine-layer barrier technology in April this year. The company believes the innovation could significantly improve the shelf life of several food categories, including sweets and ready-to-eat products.
“All sweets and edible products where longer shelf life is required can be packed in barrier trays,” Mr Gupta explained. “I believe this will help the industry produce products that can remain on shelves for more than six months.”
Currently, many ready-to-eat food products have a relatively short shelf life, typically ranging between three and five days. Advanced barrier packaging could significantly extend this timeframe.
“At present, if you look at ready-to-eat products, their shelf life is typically three to five days. But if they are packed in barrier trays or cups, their longevity automatically increases. So I think this will be revolutionary,” he remarked.
Capacity expansion and technology investments
Alongside the new barrier line, Cosmo Plastech is also investing in expanding its manufacturing capabilities. The company is introducing additional in-mold labeling machines as well as enhanced printing technologies, including label printing and dry-offset systems.
“We are already expanding by bringing in a new European nine-layer sheet line,” Gupta said. “Apart from this, we are also introducing new IML machines, which we expect to install by the end of April. We will also be installing new machines along with printing capabilities, especially for label printing and dry offset.”
The new equipment is expected to support both domestic demand and export opportunities across neighbouring markets. “The machines will be European machines and could serve both India as well as neighbouring countries,” he added.
Positioning for the next phase of growth
As the rigid packaging market continues to evolve alongside the growth of India’s processed food sector, Cosmo Plastech is positioning itself as an organised and technology-driven player within the segment.
“The only thing I would like to say is that we are one of the organized players entering this segment. I believe that people who need quality and consistency should start using Cosmo rigid packaging products,” Mr Gupta concluded.
With its debut at AAHAR and the upcoming launch of advanced barrier technology, Cosmo Plastech is signalling its intent to play a larger role in shaping the future of high-performance food packaging solutions in India.
