The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has officially notified the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026, introducing a standardized logo for vegan food products sold in India.
The amendment, published in the Gazette of India on May 21, 2026, modifies the existing Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Regulations, 2022 and aims to strengthen consumer awareness and ensure uniform identification of vegan food products in the marketplace.
According to the notification, every approved vegan food package will be required to display the prescribed vegan logo prominently on its packaging. The logo has been designed to provide consumers with a clear and recognizable visual marker, helping them identify products that comply with India's vegan food standards.
The amendment follows a comprehensive stakeholder consultation process. FSSAI had published the draft regulations in December 2022, inviting comments and suggestions from industry stakeholders, consumers, and other interested parties. The Authority reviewed the feedback received before finalizing the amendment.
The new regulations will come into force on July 1, 2027, providing food businesses with a transition period to align their packaging and labeling practices with the updated requirements.
The move is expected to support the growing vegan food sector in India by enhancing transparency, building consumer confidence, and facilitating easier identification of vegan products across retail channels.
FSSAI stated that the standardized logo will be mandatory on all approved vegan food packages, reinforcing the regulatory framework established under the Vegan Foods Regulations, 2022.
The notification was issued under the powers conferred by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and was signed by Rajit Punhani, Chief Executive Officer of FSSAI.
