In a significant milestone for India’s agri-export ecosystem, the first-ever air shipment of Karnataka’s Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged horticultural produce has been successfully flagged off to the Maldives, marking a new chapter in farmer-led global trade.

This historic consignment showcases some of Karnataka’s most iconic and heritage-rich agricultural products, including Nanjangudu Rasabale, fondly known as the “King of Bananas,” Mysore Betel Leaves (Chigurele), and Indi Lime. Renowned for their superior quality, distinct taste, and regional identity, these GI-tagged products carry the legacy of Karnataka’s farming traditions to international markets.

The initiative was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, Government of Karnataka, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). It underscores a concerted effort to strengthen structured agri-exports, ensure assured market access, and enhance price realisation for farmers.

By enabling direct international exposure for GI-tagged produce, the shipment reinforces India’s commitment to promoting value-added exports rooted in authenticity, traceability, and sustainability. It also highlights the growing global demand for region-specific, high-quality Indian agricultural products.

This landmark achievement not only celebrates India’s rich agricultural heritage but also strengthens GI branding on the global stage, opening new opportunities for Karnataka’s farmers to integrate with international value chains and expand their footprint in overseas markets.
